Malingen - Hypervelocity Impact Crater

Alternate Names N/A
Coordinates 62° 55' 1" N; 14° 33' 52" E
Notes
  1. 16 km from Lockne (doublet to Lockne).
Country Sweden
Region Jämtland
Date Confirmed 2014
Notes
  1. First confirmed evidence based on the findings of PDFs in quartz from basement breccias (Alwmark et al., 2014). Mentioned at the 2010 GSA Denver Annual Meeting as a possible impact crater based on info from 2009 and 2010 core drillings.
Buried? No
Drilled? Yes
Notes
  1. Ormo et al. (2014)
Target Type Crystalline
Notes
  1. Shallow sea of ~0.5km at time of impact (Lindstrom et al., 2005a), (Lindstrom et al., 2005b). Sediments of target: 0.03km Middle Cambrian shale (mud at time of impact) ~0.05km Ordovician Limestone 0.001-0.005km Dalby Limestone (Sturkell et al., 2000), (Ormo et al., 2014). Crystalline basement: Revsund suite granitoids.
Sub-Type Limestone, Shale, Granite
Apparent Crater Diameter (km) Unknown
Age (Ma) ~455
Notes :
  1. Based on chitinozoan biostratigraphy, the Lockne and Malingen events have the same age of approximately 455 ± 1 Ma (Grahn et al., 1996) (Ormo et al., 2014). Additional age constraints: Biostratigraphy ages with Lockne indicates an age of ~460 Ma.

Method :
  1. Biostratigraphy
Impactor Type Unknown
Notes
  1. (Ormo et al., 2014) calculated the probability that Malignen was not formed concurrently with Lockne as 1.4 × 10^−2. Timing of impact suggests association with L-chondrite parent body breakup event in the asteroid belt (Zappalà et al., 1998), (Schmitz et al., 2001).

Erosion
3
  1. Some crater-fill preserved as well as portions of rim (Ormo et al., 2014).
Final Rim Diameter
700 m
Apparent Rim Diameter
Unknown
  1. Approximately 700 m wide with some of rim preserved (Ormo et al., 2014).
Rim Reliability Index
1
  1. Rim of the crater rises ~20 m above the surrounding peneplain and exterior younger sediments (Ormo et al., 2014). Distribution of ejecta, symmetry in fractures, and down-range increase in brecciation indicate an impact from the east (Holm-Awlmark, 2021).
