Rochechouart - Hypervelocity Impact Crater

Alternate Names Rochechouart-Chassenon
Local Language
Coordinates 45° 49' 2" N; 0° 47' 14" E
Notes
  1. ~50 km W of Limoges in southern France, in the NW of the French Massif Central.
Country France
Region Limousin
Date Confirmed 1971
Notes
  1. PFs found in quartz, shattercones also observed (Kraut and French, 1971).
Buried? No
Drilled? No
Target Type Crystalline
Notes
  1. Excavated in gneisses, granites and schists of Hercynian age; sedimentary rocks of Triassic age were most likely present prior to impact (Kraut and French, 1971). Probably a shallow marine continental basin existed at the time of impact. (Zeigler, 1990) (Smith et al., 1994).
Sub-Type Gneiss, Schist, Granite
Apparent Crater Diameter (km) 32 km
Age (Ma) 206.92 ± 0.32
Notes :
  1. 206.92 ± 0.32 Ma determined by 40Ar/39Ar step heating of Babaudus impact melt rock (Cohen et al., 2017). Additional age constraints: (Kelley and Spray, 1997) give an 40Ar/39Ar age of 214 ± 8 Ma. (Reimold and Oskierski, 1987) conducted Rb-Sr analysis of melt rock and determined an age of 185.5 ± 8.8 Ma.

Method :
  1. 40Ar-39Ar
Impactor Type Iron or ordinary chondrite
Notes
  1. Strong Ni enrichment of the impact melts indicates an IIA iron meteorite with a possible composition of Fe=95% and Ni=5%. (Janssens et al., 1977). Possibly chondritic composition (Palme et al., 1980), or stony (Horn and El Goresy, 1980).

Advanced Data Fields

Notes

Erosion
6
  1. Deeply eroded to the level of the crater floor with only remnants of the crater-fill products remaining (Kraut and French, 1971).
Final Rim Diameter
Unknown
Apparent Rim Diameter
32 km
  1. On the basis of a new relationship to derive the apparent diameter using maximum shatter cone extent, the diameter is 32 km (Osinski and Ferriere, 2016). Previous apparent diameter was 23 km. (Lambert, 1977)
Rim Reliability Index
1
  1. Lacks a visible circular morphology; an inner 12 km zone of autochthonous rocks (impact melts and suevites) is surrounded by a crown of scattered patches, maximum extent of 23 km (Lambert, 1977).

Other Shock Metamorphism
No
Shatter Cones
Yes
  1. Shatter cones developed in schists and microgranites (Kraut, 1969) (Kraut and French, 1971) and were first reported in 1969 at about 1km west of Valette (Kraut, 1969). Presence of clasts of shatter cones (up to 15 cm in size) in breccias from Champonget, Longeas, and Rochechouart (Kraut, 1969). Shocked minerals (orthose and plagioclase with reduced birefringence; quartz with planar microstructures) are visible in these shatter cone (clasts in breccia) samples. Occurence of shatter cones in the city of Bouchet, in an albitophyre sample recovered at 15 m depth (no shocked minerals seen in this sample; Kraut, 1969). Shatter cones occur (in-situ) in microgranite at Fontceverane and at Mandat (Kraut, 1969). Shocked quartz (with PFs and PDFs) and kink bands in micas are observed in most shatter cone samples (Kraut, 1972). A distribution map of impactites (including shatter cones) is reported in (Kraut and Becker, 1975). Shatter cones occur in-situ at about 30-40 sites in granites, gneiss, orthogneiss, and particularly in microgranite dykes tardihercyniens (Lambert et al., 1977) (Sorel et al., 1977); cone orientation measurements were performed by these authors.
